After analyzing the section properties of petroleum pipe thread, its surface information was collected based on laser triangulation method. First the jump point of measured data was removed by standard deviation threshold judgment method. Then though judging the changes of the first derivative values, point cloud data was divided into segments. Finally breakpoints consecutive least square method was used for each segment of data fitting so as to get a continuous smooth thread section profile. The study has laid the theoretical foundation for the automatic thread detection and repair, also has important practical engineering significance.
