The planar two dimensinal ball array was used to calibrate the laser scanner error. To improve the calibration precision, Genetic algorithm was used to optimize the scanned point cloud data under Matlab software environment. The three coordinates of the ball center were taken as the optimization variables, and the standard deviation of the difference between the distances from every pints to the solving ball center and the nominal radius of the ball was taken as the optimization objective. The optimal ball center coordinates were obtained with SGA algorithm and compared with the hole center coordinates of the plate which were measured by the ultra precision instrument. The errors of every points was obtained by the comparison and computing and the calibration was completed. Experiments show the proposed method is rational and feasible with accurate calibration results.
